Introduction to Karnataka Sangeetham

Karnataka Sangeetham- The music of South India


                     Karataka Sangeetham is the classical music of the southern part of India.  It is one of the subdivision of music culture in India. The other is Hindusthani Sangeeth. Both are evolved from Hindu traditions but Hindusthani has influences from Persian and Islamic traditions. In Karnataka Sangeetham, the vocal performance has more preference. The instrumental playing of kruthi's should be in gayaki style(singing style) as kruthis' are written and composed to sing .

                     As all arts in Indian Culture , Karnataka Sangeetham also believed as a divine art. It is created  by god  or goddess.We are having reference of Indian music is from around 5th century AD. When  Persian and Islamic culture started to influence the music in Northern Part of India, the Indian musical culture is divided in to two.  Shri Purandaradasar who formulated teaching system for Karnataka Sangeetham   is said to be  Father of Karnataka Sangeetham .

                  Main Elements of Karnataka Sangeetham are Shruthi , Swaram, Ragam and Thalam. The Vocal performance of  Karnataka Sangeetham usually accompanied with Thamburu ,Veena, Violin , Mrudangam and Ghadam
